At last, the big secret of selling

I’ve told this to colleagues, employees, and everybody I know who’s gone into business. It’s a pearl of business wisdom that’s attributed to Woody Allen. It goes like this:

“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

You want to attract new customers and get more business from the ones you have? You gotta be there. You gotta remind them again and again why they should buy from you. You gotta be around when they need you, or the sale will go to somebody else. They want to see your face. They want to know you love them, that you care about their needs.

So don’t hang around all day behind your desk. Get out where the action is. Do you have a morning cup of coffee every day at ten? Don’t have it all by yourself. Call up a  customer and ask him/her to have coffee with you. In that ten or fifteen minute coffee break you just might line up a sale.

However you manage it, you want to be the guy who shows up.
